More About Opportunities for Ohioans

For individuals who qualify and are interested in employment, the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) or Individual Service Plan (ISP) Team can refer you at any point to Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD).

OOD is dedicated to assisting individuals seeking community employment by helping them find and maintain jobs that align with their skills and interests.

They will guide you in selecting an Employment/Vocational Provider who offers services aimed at developing new skills, fostering friendships, encouraging teamwork, broadening opportunities, and promoting independence.

Employment/Vocational Providers deliver a variety of employment services and training opportunities designed to support job seekers in securing and succeeding in their roles. Some examples of these services include:

  • Community Work Experience Assessment

Through a Community Work Experience assessment, individuals have the opportunity to work briefly at a local business. This experience helps identify their strengths and support needs, enabling informed recommendations for future planning.

  • Career Exploration

Career Exploration assists individuals in determining the type of job they desire. Participants visit various businesses and conduct informational interviews with employees in their fields of interest. They may also have the chance to shadow employees to observe the tasks related to their chosen occupations.

  • Job Readiness

When you are prepared to seek employment, the Employment/Vocational Provider will help you craft resumes and complete applications for businesses where you wish to work.

To ensure readiness for employment, the Employment/Vocational Provider may conduct mock interviews and review industry standards relevant to your desired job. These standards may include attendance, dress code, peer interaction, and work pace.

  • Community Work Placement

Once a job that aligns with the job seeker’s skills and interests is secured, Job Coaching Services may be provided. Job coaching offers personalized instruction for individuals once they are hired. A job coach assists new employees in mastering job tasks, building natural and peer supports, and acclimating to their work environment.

The OOD Counselor may discuss Work Incentive Planning (WIP). This planning can help address financial concerns, guiding you in deciding how many hours you might want to work each week or month. Some individuals choose this option before seeking employment, while others opt for it during their job search.

Medicaid Waivers

Medicaid waivers offer essential funding to support services for individuals with developmental disabilities. These services may encompass assistance for those living independently, with family, roommates, or with a provider through Ohio Shared Living. The waivers enable coverage of these costs, ensuring that everyone receives the necessary support, regardless of their living situation.
